THE CERAMIC 3D PRINTED CUP

Experimenting with new manufacturing techniques

The notion of tactility as the starting point for our reflection first led us to a very literal interpretation of the finger and its lines. Lines that, transposed into matter, naturally appeared to us as ceramic coils — a traditional way of modelling ceramics by hand since the dawn of time. By combining this with the emerging technology of ceramic 3D printing, we reached a convergence between a highly mechanical, innovative process and an ancestral, natural, and organic material.

More about the project

This process transforms the simple acts of throwing or moulding ceramics, allowing texture to be retained — even inside the object — enhancing the tactile experience of using the product. The meeting of these two universes also translated into a play of geometrical shapes: square (technological rigour) and round (natural softness). Combined, they bring a playful aspect and a tactile softness to the design.

Design as part of MUUTO call for project in the context of their annual design competition. The harmonisation with the Muuto universe — simple and geometric — thus felt quite organic. Our expertise in designing products for the preparation and tasting of coffee naturally led us to create a product within this domain, allowing us to integrate our identity into the Muuto catalogue.
